In the EU
In the EU, only spermidine-rich wheat germ extract has obtained Novel Food authorization. It is restricted to solid-liquid extraction from non-germinated and non-fermented common wheat germ, with a spermidine content of 0.8-2.4 mg/g. It is only allowed for adult dietary supplements and not suitable for pregnant women, lactating women or children, with a maximum supplementary daily intake of 6 mg spermidine. Spermidine trihydrochloride (synthetic), fermentation-derived spermidine and spermidine enriched from other grain germs have not obtained Novel Food approval.
In the USA
Spermidine in the United States is regulated under the DSHEA framework for dietary supplements with no pre-market approval required from the FDA.
