Pomegranate Peel Extract Punicalagin Powder Manufacturer
Punicalagin is mainly extracted from the dried pericarp of Punica granatum, a plant of the Punicaceae family, and belongs to hydrolyzable tannin polyphenols. Pomegranate peel extract exerts overall effects including astringency, broad-spectrum antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant activity, and support for vascular health. As the characteristic active ingredient of pomegranate peel extract, punicalagin delivers excellent free-radical-scavenging capacity. This raw material boasts diverse market applications. In functional food and dietary supplement sectors, it serves as an ingredient for antioxidant and vascular-health-supporting formulations. In the cosmetics industry, it can be incorporated into skincare products targeting anti-aging, soothing, anti-inflammation, brightening and repairing effects. For food processing, it acts as a natural antibacterial and preservative ingredient to reduce the usage of chemical preservatives. It is also applied in oral-care products, veterinary medicines and relevant scientific research.

Punicalagin and Ellagic Acid

Punicalagin is a large-molecule ellagitannin polyphenol derived from pomegranate, and it is the most abundant polyphenol active component in pomegranate. Its molecular backbone consists of glucose linked to multiple hexahydroxydiphenoyl (HHDP) structural units. After ingestion, it undergoes hydrolysis mediated by gastric acid, digestive enzymes and gut microbiota. The HHDP units are converted into ellagic acid via lactonization; each molecule of punicalagin can yield 2-3 molecules of ellagic acid. Due to its large molecular size, punicalagin can hardly be directly absorbed into the bloodstream.
As a key intermediate metabolite from in-vivo hydrolysis, ellagic acid is further transformed into urolithins by gut microbiota. These urolithins are the metabolites that enter systemic circulation and exert physiological effects. In short, punicalagin and ellagic acid have a precursor-hydrolysis-product relationship. Punicalagin shows better water solubility than ellagic acid, while ellagic acid has a smaller molecular weight and serves as a vital intermediate form for biological activity in the human body.

Regulatory Status of Pomegranate Peel Extract Punicalagin
In the EU
In food supplements, extracts containing 30-40% punicalagin are not classified as novel foods and may be used without pre-market authorisation. However, when used in conventional foods other than food supplements (e.g. beverages and snacks), such extracts are regarded as novel foods and require prior authorisation from the European Commission before being legally placed on the market, as pomegranate pericarp has not been significantly consumed as a traditional food in the EU. Furthermore, in the field of feed additives, EFSA has received an application for authorisation of pomegranate peel extract (40% punicalagin) as a sensory additive for all animal species, which is currently under assessment.
In the USA
Pomegranate peel extract is classified as a dietary supplement raw material and does not require pre-market approval by the FDA. Punicalagin does not hold an independent GRAS status. High-purity monomeric punicalagin has no publicly available NDI notification and cannot be directly marketed as a dietary ingredient; manufacturers are required to submit an NDI notification. In cosmetics, the CIR has approved the use of pomegranate peel extract with no usage restrictions.
How to Make Pomegranate Peel Extract Punicalagin Powder?
Raw Material Pretreatment: Take fresh pomegranate peel, perform washing and cutting; dry at 40 ℃ with moisture content controlled below 1%.
Grinding & Sieving: Grind and sieve the dried pomegranate peel.
Solvent Mixing: Mix the raw material with water-ethanol solvent according to solid-liquid ratio.
Extraction: Conduct single-step extraction with intermittent shaking.
Solid-Liquid Separation: The extract is subjected to centrifugation and filtration.
Vacuum Concentration: Concentrate the filtrate under vacuum.
Spray Drying: Spray-dry the concentrated solution to obtain finished pomegranate peel extract powder.

What Are the Benefits of Pomegranate Peel Extract?

Antifungal Activity of Pomegranate Peel Extract
Pomegranate peel extract contains active substances such as tannins, gallic acid and pomegranate peel polyphenols. It exhibits favorable antifungal effects in in-vitro tests and can inhibit various pathogenic fungi including Candida albicans, Aspergillus and dermatophytes. The extract mainly suppresses fungal proliferation by damaging fungal cell membranes, hindering cell-wall formation and interfering with nucleic acid metabolism.
It also inhibits the formation of fungal biofilms, which helps mitigate fungal drug-resistance issues. In-vitro studies confirm that it can block fungal spore germination and mycelial growth. Some experiments indicate that it produces synergistic bacteriostatic effects when combined with conventional antifungal agents.
It should be noted that most relevant research remains at the in-vitro laboratory stage. Further in-vivo safety and efficacy validation are required before practical application.

Pomegranate Peel Extract for Skin
Pomegranate peel extract contains active ingredients such as punicalagin, ellagic acid, flavonoids and polysaccharides, and exhibits excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It scavenges free radicals, mitigates oxidative damage induced by UV radiation, inhibits the release of inflammatory cytokines, and soothes cutaneous inflammatory responses.
For anti-aging purposes, this ingredient reduces the degradation and loss of collagen and elastin, while promoting the production of type-I procollagen. It also features photoprotective effects: it can absorb UVA and UVB and alleviate UV-inflicted damage to skin cell DNA.
For oily and acne-prone skin, pomegranate peel extract delivers antibacterial activity against harmful microbes including Staphylococcus aureus. Via its astringent effect, it constricts pores and regulates sebum secretion. In addition, it supports skin wound repair and inhibits melanogenesis-related enzymes, showing potential for brightening and fading pigmentation.

Punicalagins Testosterone
Punicalagin, the primary polyphenol active ingredient derived from pomegranate, exhibits potent antioxidant properties. It scavenges free radicals in the body and mitigates cellular damage caused by oxidative stress, helping preserve vascular endothelial integrity and vascular elasticity, which benefits male cardiovascular health. It also delivers anti-inflammatory effects, easing chronic low-grade inflammation in the body, protecting prostate tissue and relieving inflammatory discomfort associated with the prostate.
Furthermore, punicalagin helps maintain balanced hormonal metabolism, supports stable testosterone levels, boosts physical energy, reduces oxidative harm to reproductive cells, and offers auxiliary protection for sperm quality. Proper dietary intake of punicalagin provides multi-faceted antioxidant support for men's cardiovascular system, reproductive system and overall metabolism.
What Are the Uses of Pomegranate Peel Extract?
Pomegranate Peel Extract Supplement
Pomegranate peel extract exerts its physiological activities mainly through total polyphenols, punicalagin and ellagic acid, and is mostly formulated into capsules, compressed candies, powders and other dosage forms. It is primarily positioned for antioxidant, gut-health support and metabolic regulation. It can also be compounded with raw materials such as grape seed and curcumin for dietary supplement products targeting cardiovascular support, weight management and anti-aging.

Pomegranate Peel Extract Personal Care Products
Pomegranate peel extract has been widely adopted in skincare and oral-care products. Leveraging its polyphenol properties of antioxidant activity, tyrosinase inhibition, anti-inflammation and astringency, it is incorporated into toners, serums, masks and lotions for anti-aging repair, oil-control soothing and alleviating acne-related inflammation. It helps protect collagen and mitigate skin damage caused by external oxidative stress. For oral-care applications, it is used in herbal mouthwashes and antibacterial toothpastes. Its antibacterial effects help balance oral microbiota and relieve mild gingival inflammation.
