Regulatory Status of Epimedium Extract
European Union (EU)
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers Epimedium extracts (like from E. brevicornum) as novel foods, requiring specific authorization before being sold as food or supplements.
Epimedium Extract Powder Botanical Source
The core extraction source of Epimedium extract is four authentic plant species of the genus Epimedium in the Berberidaceae family, namely Epimedium sagittatum, Epimedium koreanum, Epimedium pubescens, and Epimedium brevicornum.
We mainly select the dried aerial parts of Epimedium sagittatum as raw material due to its high yield and the fact that active ingredients in this part account for over 85% of the entire plant.
The Epimedium sagittatum we use is mainly produced in the Qinling-Bashan Mountains in southern Shaanxi Province. The transitional climate, humus-rich slightly acidic soil, and shady and moist understory environment here provide ideal growing conditions for Epimedium sagittatum, making the content of its active ingredients (such as icariin) significantly higher than that in ordinary producing areas.

Epimedium Extract Powder Extraction Process
We process our epimedium extract powder following these five steps:

Epimedium Extract for Men
For men’s reproductive health
Relevant studies published in the China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica have shown that Epimedium extract can significantly increase testosterone levels in male animals and exert an auxiliary improving effect on sperm parameters in populations with oligospermia (low sperm count) and asthenospermia (poor sperm motility). It promotes the secretion of testosterone in men, improves sperm motility, increases sperm count, and reduces sperm deformity rate; meanwhile, it enhances the microcirculation of the male reproductive system, providing a favorable environment for sperm production.
For men’s energy
Epimedium can enhance ATP production, promote energy metabolism, improve mitochondrial function, and alleviate muscle fatigue; it also regulates adrenal cortical function and reduces the secretion of stress hormones. Therefore, our Epimedium extract is suitable for office workers and athletes, and can serve as the core ingredient in “energy supplement” and “anti-fatigue” products.
For men’s vascular health
Epimedium can dilate peripheral blood vessels, reduce blood viscosity, and improve the microcirculation of reproductive organs. Meanwhile, it helps regulate blood pressure and blood lipids, thereby lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Epimedium Extract for Women
For women’s menopausal syndrome
Epimedium extract icariin exhibits phytoestrogen-like activity, which can bidirectionally regulate estrogen levels in women, alleviating menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, vivid dreams, and mood swings. Meanwhile, it protects ovarian function and delays the aging of the reproductive system. Multiple clinical studies have shown that Epimedium extract can alleviate endocrine disorders in perimenopausal women and improve their quality of life.
For women’s skincare
Anti-aging and skin beautification are two of the core advantages of Epimedium extract, which can bidirectionally empower both oral supplements and topical skincare products: When taken orally, its strong antioxidant activity effectively scavenges free radicals and inhibits collagen loss, thereby improving skin elasticity and reducing wrinkle formation; when added topically to skincare products, it promotes skin microcirculation, inhibits tyrosinase activity, and helps brighten skin tone and fade dark spots, while enhancing the skin barrier function.
For women’s menstrual health
Epimedium extract enables the auxiliary regulation of women’s menstrual health. Its mechanism of action lies in improving pelvic microcirculation and relieving uterine smooth muscle spasm, thereby exerting an auxiliary relieving effect on primary dysmenorrhea and irregular menstruation. Meanwhile, it reduces pelvic inflammatory responses during menstruation through its anti-inflammatory activity.
Thus, in compliance with regulatory requirements, it can be stated as “supports menstrual health” or “helps alleviate menstrual discomfort,” making it suitable for “women’s menstrual care” products.

Epimedium Extract Uses
For men
Epimedium extract has become a highly compatible raw material in the field of male health products, with its efficacy precisely covering core needs such as male reproductive health, energy management, and bone health maintenance. It is often used in combination with maca root.

For women
Therefore, it is not only suitable for oral supplements targeting “female anti-aging” and “skin care” but also can be used as a core ingredient in skincare products such as facial creams and serums, focusing on the effects of “antioxidation,” “brightening and spot-fading,” and “anti-wrinkle and firming.”

Epimedium Extract Dosage and Side Effects

As a natural plant-derived functional ingredient, Epimedium extract exhibits high safety at the recommended dosage (with an adult daily icariin intake of 10-180 mg, based on human equivalent dose studies). Its side effects are mostly associated with excessive intake, individual differences, or inappropriate use by contraindicated populations. Based on pharmacological research and clinical data, the following systematically summarizes its potential side effects.
- Mild Digestive Discomfort: The most common (incidence < 5%), manifested as nausea, abdominal distension, diarrhea, etc.
- Endocrine System Disturbance: Incidence < 3% (mainly associated with excessive intake). In men, it may cause abnormal testosterone levels, irritability, insomnia, etc.; in women, it is prone to irregular menstrual cycles and breast tenderness.
- Cardiovascular System-Related Reactions: Incidence < 2% (more prevalent in specific populations), manifested as dizziness, blood pressure fluctuations, palpitations, etc.
- Allergic Reactions: Rare (incidence < 1%), primarily presenting as skin itching and rashes; extremely rare cases may involve severe laryngeal edema. For commercial compliance, it must be clearly labeled on the product: “Contraindicated in individuals allergic to this product and Epimedium components.”
