Description

Turmeric Extract Curcumin Powder Supplier

Curcuminoids are the core active components of turmeric extract, mainly consisting of curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin. Curcuminoids have extensive applications. In the dietary supplement industry, they are commonly used for the R&D and production of capsules, tablets and other products for joint care, antioxidant support and liver protection. In the food sector, they can serve as natural yellow pigments in baked goods, seasonings and functional beverages, as well as functional ingredients added to various health foods. In skincare products, curcumin fits skin-repairing and anti-aging formulations, while colorless tetrahydrocurcumin is better suited for light-toned, clear-formula skincare items. Furthermore, curcuminoids are gradually being applied in pet and livestock feed industries.

How to Make Water-Soluble Curcumin Powder?

Production of water-soluble curcumin powder starts with raw material preparation and weighing, using curcumin raw material with a content of ≥95%, together with water and food-grade organic solvents. It then proceeds to the mixing and pretreatment process for pre-treatment of material blending, followed by liquid preparation and dissolution. Maltodextrin is added into the liquid system for encapsulation. The encapsulated material is sent to spray drying to obtain powder, which then undergoes sieving and packing to yield the finished water-soluble curcumin powder.

Regulatory Status of Turmeric Curcumin Extract

The regulatory status differs significantly between standard turmeric extract (curcuminoids) and tetrahydrocurcuminoids. Bisdemethoxycurcumin and demethoxycurcumin are constituents within natural curcuminoid mixtures and are not approved as standalone raw-material ingredients.

In the USA

Under the regulatory framework of the US FDA, GRAS and DSHEA, natural curcuminoids from turmeric extract hold multiple GRAS notifications including GRN-460 and GRN-000822. They can be used in conventional foods, seasonings, baked goods and snacks, and also serve as raw materials for dietary supplements, as well as being authorised for use as food colourant E100. This material is prohibited for use in infant formula and meat-poultry-egg products. Tetrahydrocurcuminoids, the hydrogenated derivatives, also have GRAS notifications for applications in foods and dietary supplements. Bisdemethoxycurcumin and demethoxycurcumin are considered inherent components of curcuminoid mixtures and do not require separate filings.

In the EU

Pursuant to the EU Novel Food Regulation, natural curcuminoids from turmeric extract are ingredients with a long-term history of use and may be directly placed on the market as food-supplement raw materials. However, they are classified as unauthorised novel food for general-food applications such as beverages, snacks and functional foods, so this ingredient is restricted exclusively to the food-supplement segment. The EU enforces stringent safety and labelling regulations; authorities in France, Italy, Denmark and other member states have issued hepatotoxicity warnings, with special risk alerts for high-bioavailability formulations combined with piperine. Hydrogen-modified tetrahydrocurcuminoids have obtained formal EU Novel Food authorisation with a five-year data-protection period.

What Are the Benefits of Turmeric Extract Curcumin?

Curcumin for Inflammation

Turmeric Extract Curcumin for Inflammation

Curcumin, the primary active component in turmeric extract, modulates human inflammatory responses via multi‑target actions. At the molecular level, curcumin inhibits the activation of core inflammatory transcription factors such as NF‑κB and AP‑1, regulating the expression of various pro‑inflammatory genes at the source.

Meanwhile, it intervenes in p38 MAPK and JNK signaling pathways, suppresses NLRP3 inflammasome assembly, reduces the activity of pro‑inflammatory enzymes including COX‑2 and iNOS, and helps lower the production of pro‑inflammatory cytokines such as IL‑1β, IL‑6 and TNF‑α, achieving multi‑step regulation of inflammatory pathways.

Turmeric Extract Curcumin for Joint Pain Relief

Turmeric root extract offers multifaceted health support for people experiencing joint discomfort and osteoarthritis, backed by numerous clinical studies.

Firstly, multiple clinical studies show that curcumin within turmeric extract delivers favorable soothing effects on joint discomfort caused by knee osteoarthritis, with performance comparable to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents such as ibuprofen.

Secondly, it helps preserve joint function and improve quality of life. Upon turmeric extract supplementation, measurable improvements are observed in subjects' composite WOMAC scores (evaluating joint pain, stiffness and physical mobility), KOOS scores for knee-injury and osteoarthritis outcomes, alongside increased 6-minute walking distance. This helps sustain everyday mobility and enhance quality of life.

Lastly, it modulates the body's inflammatory status and protects joint cartilage. Curcumin modulates key inflammatory markers including C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). It also inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes responsible for cartilage degradation, thereby shielding joint cartilage and supporting long-term joint health.

Curcumin for Weight Loss

Turmeric Extract Curcumin for Weight Loss

Curcumin, the primary active constituent in turmeric extract, is not a direct fat-burning or weight-loss ingredient, yet it supports healthy weight management through multiple physiological pathways. Curcumin activates the AMPK signaling pathway and inhibits PPAR-γ adipogenic transcription factors to slow the differentiation of pre-adipocytes into mature adipocytes. It promotes browning of white adipose tissue to boost caloric expenditure. Meanwhile, it modulates the NF-κB signaling pathway to mitigate chronic low-grade inflammation in adipose tissue, improve insulin sensitivity, and sustain the normal balance between lipid synthesis and breakdown.

It also preserves intestinal barrier integrity and modulates gut microbiota, helping reduce visceral fat accumulation. Note that curcumin exhibits inherently low bioavailability. Available human clinical studies indicate its modest effects on body weight and BMI. It serves only as a metabolic-support ingredient alongside a balanced diet and regular exercise, and shall not be used for standalone weight-loss purposes.

Turmeric Extract Curcumin Uses

Turmeric Extract in Supplements

Curcuma longa extract is a globally popular natural dietary ingredient. The mainstream specification is 95% curcuminoids, which is manufactured into dosage forms including hard capsules, softgels, tablets, gummies and powders. Targeting joint care, chronic inflammation modulation, liver protection, metabolic support, antioxidant and anti-aging applications, it alleviates joint discomfort by inhibiting the NF-κB inflammatory pathway and helps ameliorate alcohol-induced and metabolic liver injury. Mature high-end health-care product lines based on this ingredient have been well-established in overseas markets.

Turmeric Extract in Food

Curcuma root extract serves dual-purpose as the natural yellow colorant E100 and a functional additive. Aligning with the clean-label trend, it can replace synthetic artificial pigments such as tartrazine and sunset yellow, and is widely applied for color adjustment and flavor enhancement in condiments, baked goods, confectionery, meat products, yogurts and other items. Its dosage must comply strictly with food regulations of respective countries.

Turmeric Extract in Cosmetics

Both curcumin and its reduced derivative tetrahydrocurcumin are utilized in cosmetic formulations. Ordinary curcumin is yellow-hued and mostly incorporated into facial masks, bath products and hair-body care items to deliver anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, soothe redness and stabilize skin condition. Tetrahydrocurcumin features a pale color and exhibits stronger inhibitory activity against tyrosinase. As a high-end brightening and spot-fading raw material, it is used in serums, anti-spot creams and acne-mark repair products to brighten skin tone, mitigate hyperpigmentation and combat photoaging. In addition, the turmeric extract is also formulated into scalp-care products to relieve scalp inflammation and ease scalp redness and itching.

Turmeric Extract in Feed

As an antibiotic-alternative plant-derived feed additive, turmeric extract is applied in poultry, swine, ruminant and aquaculture production owing to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective and gut-regulating properties. When added to broiler feed, it improves intestinal health, reduces mortality and culling rate, and enhances meat quality. Formulations for sows and piglets help ease metabolic stress and boost feed conversion ratio. For ruminants, it alleviates mastitis and improves milk quality. In aquafeed, it protects the liver of fish and shrimp, increases fry survival rate and optimizes body pigmentation. It is also developed into pet nutritional supplements for joint care and liver-supporting products for dogs and cats.

FAQ

Q: Is curcumin the same as turmeric?

A: Curcumin is not identical to turmeric. Turmeric is the rhizome raw material of a Zingiberaceae plant containing a variety of active ingredients, while curcumin is the core active substance extracted from turmeric and merely one of its numerous components. Besides curcumin, turmeric also contains volatile oils, resins and other constituents. The two represent the relationship between raw material and its key active ingredient and cannot be equated directly.

Q: When to take turmeric?

A: Turmeric-based dietary supplements are generally recommended to be taken with or after meals. As curcumin is fatsoluble, fats from food can improve its absorption in the human body. Taking it on an empty stomach is not advised, since it results in poor absorption and may trigger stomach discomfort in some individuals. Those with sensitive stomachs should strictly take it alongside main meals and follow the recommended dosage stated on the product label.
