Ursolic Acid and Oleanolic Acid

Ursolic acid and oleanolic acid are pentacyclic triterpene isomers with identical molecular formula and molecular weight. They often coexist in plants such as loquat leaves and rosemary, share similar physicochemical properties, and both exhibit basic activities including anti-inflammation, antioxidant and liver-protective effects.

The only structural difference lies in the methyl substitution position on the E ring, leading to distinct functional focuses: ursolic acid delivers superior effects in bacteriostasis, anti-inflammation, oil control, fat reduction and skin repair, while oleanolic acid shows more prominent efficacy in lowering transaminases and liver protection with better oral safety.

Healthkintai can also supply oleanolic acid powder for you, which is extracted from olive leaves.

Ursolic Acid Solubility

Ursolic acid is a lipophilic triterpenoid with extremely poor water solubility, barely soluble in water at room temperature. It is slightly soluble in ethanol at ambient temperature, soluble in methanol and acetone, and highly soluble in polar organic solvents such as DMSO and pyridine, while hardly soluble in alkanes, including petroleum ether and n-hexane. Increasing temperature can significantly enhance its solubility in alcohols. Its water solubility improves greatly after neutralization with alkali to form salts, and co-solvents are required to prepare its aqueous solutions.

Regulatory Status of Ursolic Acid

The US

In the US market, ursolic acid is regulated by three categories based on its applications: dietary supplements, cosmetics, and industrial raw materials.

For dietary supplements, ursolic acid-related extracts derived from edible natural plants have a long history of safe consumption. Among them, rosemary extract is recognized as a GRAS natural antioxidant raw material. High-purity ursolic acid monomers can be circulated in compliance with regulations based on the long-term consumption history of their natural botanical sources without separate filings. Dietary supplement products may carry descriptive statements such as supporting antioxidant status in the body, maintaining muscle health, and supporting healthy skin.

When used in cosmetics, ursolic acid does not require pre-market approval, and manufacturers shall conduct independent safety risk assessments.

Industrial-grade ursolic acid is listed on the US TSCA Existing Chemical Substances Inventory and can be imported and exported normally in compliance with relevant regulations.

EU

The EU implements tiered regulation for ursolic acid covering food, cosmetics and chemical substances. For food applications, differentiated management applies to composite herbal extracts and high-purity monomers. Rosemary extract is legally permitted as a food antioxidant.

Traditional herbal extracts containing ursolic acid qualify as non-novel foods due to their long history of consumption and can be used in food supplements. However, isolated purified ursolic acid monomers with a purity of 90% or above are classified as Novel Foods. For cosmetic use, ursolic acid is listed in the CosIng raw material database and can be lawfully added to all categories of skincare products. As a chemical substance, it is included in the EINECS Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances.

What Are the Benefits of Ursolic Acid?

Ursolic acid features antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, suitable for both men and women. When applied topically, it alleviates redness and breakouts, repairs skin texture and delays skin aging. Taken internally, it helps regulate endocrine function, supports men in maintaining physical fitness, stabilizes women's endocrine system, and aids weight loss, delivering comprehensive care for skin and body.

Ursolic Acid Benefits for Skin

Ursolic acid delivers multiple skincare benefits including antioxidant protection, soothing repair, skin conditioning and reduction of visible signs of skin aging. This active ingredient helps neutralize excess free radicals on the skin surface and mitigate oxidative damage caused by environmental stressors and UV exposure. It gently modulates tyrosinase activity to fade dullness and even out skin tone.

By calming inflammatory responses and regulating the release of skin irritant mediators, it alleviates redness and sensitivity triggered by external stimuli, as well as swelling and discomfort associated with blemish-prone skin. It also regulates sebum production to balance skin oil and moisture levels, unclog pores gently and refine rough texture caused by closed comedones and blackheads.

In anti-aging care, ursolic acid boosts the activity of dermal fibroblasts, supporting the skin's natural production of collagen and elastin to minimize fine lines and early sagging. It also gently regulates the turnover cycle of keratinocytes to facilitate natural exfoliation of dead skin cells, reinforce the skin's lipid barrier and strengthen its natural moisture-locking defense. Additionally, it aids in balancing the skin's surface microbiome by curbing excessive proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes, stabilizing blemish-prone complexions and lowering the likelihood of recurring breakouts.

Ursolic Acid Fat Loss/Weight Loss

As natural plant ingredients gain widespread attention in weight management, people frequently ask: Does ursolic acid aid weight loss? Can ursolic acid burn fat? First of all, ursolic acid helps boost cellular energy metabolism efficiency, steering sugars and lipids in the body to be preferentially converted into energy for daily consumption, thereby cutting down excess energy that would otherwise be stored as fat.

Secondly, it regulates the growth and differentiation of preadipocytes, curbing the formation and accumulation of white adipose tissue and fundamentally lowering the body's capacity to store lipids.

Furthermore, this compound modulates factors associated with lipid metabolism in the body. It assists in suppressing the synthesis of fatty acids and triglycerides in the liver and adipose tissue, while facilitating the normal breakdown of lipids within mature adipocytes, alleviating subcutaneous and visceral fat buildup. In addition, ursolic acid improves insulin sensitivity in the human body, reducing fat accumulation triggered by metabolic disorders.

Ursolic Acid Benefits for Men

Ursolic acid provides nutritional support for men's overall physical well-being. For metabolic maintenance, it helps improve cellular energy efficiency, reduce white fat accumulation and boost fat metabolism to regulate subcutaneous and visceral fat buildup.

While supporting body fat management, it preserves lean muscle and facilitates healthy muscle growth to help maintain a toned, balanced physique. It also aids in enhancing insulin sensitivity and alleviates concerns such as weight gain and mental fatigue caused by metabolic imbalance.

When it comes to supporting men's endocrine health, this active ingredient gently modulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis to sustain healthy, normal testosterone production, ease physical weariness, boost exercise stamina, and speed up post-workout recovery.

Ursolic Acid Benefits for Women

Ursolic acid supports women's endocrine health by helping stabilize estrogen levels and easing edema and fatigue caused by menstrual cycles and irregular schedules. It also boosts cellular energy metabolism, reduces abdominal fat, shapes a firm body contour, and improves insulin sensitivity.

With natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it neutralizes free radicals and brightens dull skin. Consistent supplementation paired with regular exercise helps relieve sub-health issues such as body shape changes, poor complexion and low stamina triggered by late nights, lack of activity and hormonal fluctuations.

Ursolic Acid for Gallstones

Ursolic acid helps support healthy liver and gallbladder metabolism. It regulates lipid metabolism in the body, reduces excess lipid buildup in the liver, lowers cholesterol saturation in bile, and minimizes potential triggers for cholesterol crystal formation. It also features antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to ease mild biliary inflammation and support smooth bile flow. Taken regularly in moderate doses alongside a low-fat light diet, it can relieve liver and gallbladder strain caused by imbalanced fat metabolism and reduce biliary stagnation and discomfort linked to abnormal high-cholesterol metabolism.

Ursolic Acid Uses

Ursolic Acid Supplements

As a popular raw material for dietary supplements, ursolic acid is commonly formulated into hard capsules, compound tablets, meal replacement powders and liquid forms. It is widely used in sports nutrition, female endocrine support supplements, metabolic & weight management products, liver and gallbladder care formulas, as well as anti-aging complex nutrients for middle-aged and elderly consumers. To boost the absorption rate of its active ingredients, manufacturers often combine ursolic acid with piperine. It can also be blended with white kidney bean extract, vitamins and other herbal extracts to create multi-functional compound formulas.

Ursolic Acid Toxicity

Ursolic acid is backed by comprehensive and reliable pharmacological and toxicological safety test data and classified as practically non-toxic. In a 90-day repeated-dose study on rats, no organic lesions were observed in visceral organs at a daily dosage of 1000 mg/kg. The ingredient has also been proven free of genotoxicity and reproductive developmental toxicity.

A single oral dose of 1000 mg ursolic acid does not cause severe discomfort in healthy humans, and the recommended daily dosage range of 100–500 mg for dietary supplements delivers excellent human tolerance. Complete long-term safety research is insufficient for individuals with impaired liver or kidney function, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, so long-term continuous supplementation is not advised for these groups.

When used topically as a skincare raw material, ursolic acid features extremely low irritation and rarely triggers skin allergic reactions.

FAQ

Q: Is rosemary extract the same as ursolic acid?

A: Rosemary extract and ursolic acid are not the same, with a relationship of inclusion. Rosemary extract is a composite botanical raw material extracted from the whole rosemary plant, containing multiple active ingredients such as ursolic acid, rosemary phenol and carnosic acid. In contrast, ursolic acid is a single triterpenoid active monomer that can be separately purified from raw materials like loquat leaves besides rosemary. High-purity ursolic acid specifications of 25%, 90% and 98% available on the market are single active products refined via separation processes, featuring higher purity and more targeted efficacy. Ordinary rosemary extract is merely a mixture of various substances. The two differ significantly in composition, purity standards and application scenarios and cannot be used interchangeably.

Q: What are the side effects of ursolic acid tablets?

A: Side effects of ursolic acid tablets are mild at regular dosages and mainly affect the gastrointestinal tract. A small number of users may experience discomfort such as nausea, dull stomach pain, bloating, diarrhea and poor appetite. These symptoms are generally mild and resolve spontaneously after discontinuing administration. Long-term excessive intake may cause temporary slight fluctuations in liver and kidney function indicators, which are reversible and will not lead to permanent organ damage. Ursolic acid exerts auxiliary hypoglycemic and anticoagulant effects; concomitant use with hypoglycemic or anticoagulant medicines may amplify drug efficacy, triggering risks of hypoglycemia and bleeding. There is insufficient comprehensive safety data for people with impaired liver or kidney function, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, who may face uncertain hidden risks with long-term administration. Mild redness and itching occasionally occur in people with sensitive skin when using topical preparations containing ursolic acid, while systemic adverse reactions like skin allergies, dizziness and fatigue are rarely seen after oral intake of the tablets.
