EU EFSA
In the EU market, lycopene is classified as a food colourant with the unified code E160d. Raw materials produced via three processes-natural tomato oleoresin, fermentation by Blakeslea trispora, and chemical synthesis-are all legally permitted as general food additives for limited addition in most food categories. As an active ingredient in food supplements, tomato-derived lycopene was approved and included in the EU Novel Food list as early as 2009, eliminating the need for a new Novel Food application.
