The official botanical sources of Cistanche extract are two perennial parasitic herbaceous plants of the genus Cistanche (Orobanchaceae) recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, namely Cistanche deserticola (desert cistanche) and Cistanche tubulosa. Their medicinal part is the dried fleshy stem with scale leaves.

• Cistanche deserticola is a tall plant, reaching up to 1.6 meters in height. It mainly parasitizes the roots of Haloxylon ammodendron and Haloxylon persicum of the Chenopodiaceae family, and grows in extremely arid environments such as desert dunes and Gobi deserts at an altitude of 225 to 1150 meters. It is mainly produced in the northwestern desert regions of China, including western Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Gansu and northern Xinjiang.
• Cistanche tubulosa is 60 to 100 centimeters tall, with a mostly fusiform or flattened columnar stem. It mainly parasitizes the roots of plants of the genus Tamarix (Tamaricaceae), and is concentrated in the desert areas around the Taklamakan Desert in southern Xinjiang, such as Hotan, Minfeng and Yutian, at an altitude of approximately 1200 meters.

The extraction process of Cistanche extract begins with the dried fleshy stems of Cistanche deserticola or Cistanche tubulosa as specified in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.

• The raw materials are selected to remove impurities, washed, dried at low temperature, and then crushed into coarse powder.
• Subsequently, ethanol reflux extraction is adopted, with an appropriate amount of ethanol solution added for heating and reflux extraction several times to fully dissolve active ingredients such as echinacoside and verbascoside.
• After extraction, the mixture is filtered while hot, the filtrate is combined and concentrated under reduced pressure, ethanol is recovered at low temperature, and the extract is concentrated into a clear paste with the specified relative density.
• According to product requirements, further impurity removal by water precipitation can be performed to remove impurities such as polysaccharides and proteins and enrich active components.
• Finally, the concentrated and refined extract is spray-dried into powder, and the finished Cistanche extract is obtained after passing screening and testing of indicators, including content and microorganisms.
